Wildlife in A Tropical Climate – A Magnificent Galore of Variety

Tropical Wildlife is something that a majority of wildlife lovers relish and take massive pains to explore in different parts of the world. Speaking of Odisha in India, Bhitarkanika Wildlife species fall in the bracket of Tropical Wildlife.
The types of species in and around the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary is very close to what all tropical climate wildlife across the globe. It comprises of a variety of reptiles, mammals, amphibians, birds, etc.

Apart from that, the Bhitarkanika Wildlife is a huge part of the complete mangrove system that engulfs the area since it is an estuary that is formed by the River Baitarani and the Bay of Bengal. The mangrove forest is the second biggest in all of India.

Tropical Climate Wildlife – The Varieties

As we had mentioned above, tropical climate wildlife is a mix of almost all types of animals out there in the wild. Notably, the biggest contributors in the ecosystem from the fauna are a part of the tropical climate wildlife.
The biggest sections of animals that constitute the tropical climate wildlife are as follows:

When it comes to Mammals, there are a huge number of species. The mammals are mostly overlooked at the Bhitarkanika Wildlife sanctuary since the most focus is on the birds and the reptiles.

However, the mammals that are in abundance in the reserve are as follows:

  • Chital
  • Rhesus Monkey
  • Sambar Deer
  • Jackals and Hyena
  • Jungle Cats
  • Wolves etc.

The Rhesus Monkey, Jungle Cates, and the Sambar Deer are the prime attraction among the plethora of mammals that are present in the sanctuary. Incidentally, these are the usual types of animals that one can find in a Tropical Wildlife setting.
Birds are also a significant part of the ecosystem that is set up. A massive number of native birds, as well as migratory birds, grace the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary in a religious manner. However, with the rapid urbanization and deforestation everywhere, the numbers of various birds are dropping.

Irrespective of that, the most common types of birds that can be spotted at the sanctuary are the Black Ibis and Darter. On the same note, the most surprising addition to the list is the Rare Long Billed Plover Bird, a migratory bird from Eastern Asia, Russia and Siberia.

Reptiles – The Center of Attraction

Reptiles are the biggest percentage of the population as far as tropical climate wildlife is concerned. The Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary is a prime example of it. The number of reptiles that consider Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary as their home is scintillating.

The most common types of reptiles found here are:

  • Saltwater Crocodile
  • White Crocodile
  • Monitor Lizards
  • Indian Python
  • King Cobra etc.

The most notable reptiles among the list are the saltwater crocodiles and the white crocodiles. So, a huge section of wildlife lovers visits the Bhitarkanika Wildlife just to have a look at the glorious crocodile types that breed and live here in the vicinity.

One can never forget the Olive Ridley turtles while mentioning the Bhitarkanika Wildlife. The Olive Turtles have their breeding seasons at the Gahirmatha Beach, which is a little bit away from the port town of Dhamra.
The Olive Ridley Turtles are considered to be endangered. It is because of the rapid declination in their population by about 30% in the past couple of decades. Odisha’s Gahirmatha Beach is a major breeding ground for the Olive Ridley Turtles among a select few parts on the planet.
